The Sourhern Ice Fields : M/N Skorpios III : Optional Tours
ChileThe Milodon Cave Tour
Located 24 kilometers to the north of Puerto Natales, this Natural Monument is made up of three caves and a rock conglomerate known as the “Chair of the Devil”.

The largest of these caves is found at 150 meters above sea level and has dimensions of: 30 meters high, 80 meters across the front and 200 meters of depth. The scientific interest of this area is due to the scientific discovery, in 1896, of the skin, bones and other remains of an animal that is now extinct, the MILODON (Mylodon Darwinian), a herbivorous animal of immense dimensions that became extinct, probably, at the end of the Pleistocene.

Further than the historic, scientific and cultural importance that the Cave of Milodón possesses, this area offers an additional attraction, that of its breathtaking scenery and natural life. This area corresponds to a transition zone between the steppes and the forests. Its typical flora is the native semi hard woods, the Calafate and the Romerillo. Wildlife life is abundant, especially that of birds.

Before arriving to the cave, the access path passes by the “Chair of the Devil”, a name that, due to popular imagination, and given the fact that the rocky structure has the aspect of a chair which is said to have been the “chair” of Milodón, which by legend has been transformed into “devil”. This area is under the supervision of the National Forest Corporation (CONAF).

Isabel Silva
Leave Puerto Natales travelling along Seno de Ultima Esperanza (Last Hope Inlet), with its many blackneck swans. Past the old buildings of Frigorificos Bories (Bories Cold Storage House), the route goes through a large valley, finally arriving at the Cueva del Milodon.
Just before arriving at the cave, you will pass a large rock formation that is know as the Silla del Diablo (Devil's Seat). At the end of the past century, the remains of a prehistoric Milodon (Perezoso Desdentado) were found in the 200 meter deep Milodon Cave. The huge size of the cave is due to a geological fault of carbonate which was slowly dissolved by seeping water.
You can walk into the cave and look back to see the silhouette of a life-size Milodon recreation guarding the entrance to the cave that was its refuge thousands of years ago
